The Edinburgh SC is part of the Association of Speakers Clubs, a national organisation which has clubs across Britain.  The club is part of the Edinburgh Area and the Central District.  Members of the Edinburgh SC receive benefits from the ASC including:

The Speakers Guide

The Speakers Guide (also known as the Speakers Manual) lays out the ASC method of learning to speak with confidence it sets out the ten assignments members must complete satisfactorily in order to gain the ASC Certificate of Achievement:
  • B1: Making a Start
  • B2: Mean What You Say
  • B3: Speech Construction
  • B4: Use of Gestures
  • B5: Use of Voice
  • B6: Vocabulary and Word Pictures
  • B7: The Use of Notes
  • B8: Use of Humour
  • B9: Audience Rapport
  • B10: The Masterpiece
After completing these assignments members may if they wish go on to ten advanced assignements which include the used of visual aids, lecturing, business presentations and after dinner speaking.  The guide also gives advice on topics (impromptu speaking), chairmanship and the conduct of meetings.  It is the basis of the work of the club and gives members advice on the full range of speaking activities both within the club and outwith.

National Competitions

Each year the ASC organises national competitions in speaking, evaluation and topics (imprompu speaking).  Details on the formats of these competitions can be found here.

Speaker of the Year 2010

Nick Owen


Life Changing
Each year the ASC awards the Speaker of the Year and hosts a formal dinner to raise money for the winner's chosen charity.  This years Speaker of the Year is Nick Owen.
Nick Owen is currently the main presenter on the regional news programme BBC Midlands Today. Nick has worked in regional and national TV since the late Seventies. He came to national prominence in 1983 as one of the first faces to appear on breakfast television in Britain.Nick moved to BBC One to co-present the popular Good Morning with Anne and Nick from 1992 until May 1996 – a total of 600 programmes.In 2006, he was awarded the Baird Medal by the Royal Television Society.

Venue: Thistle Hotel, Birmingham Dinner tickets: £30
Bed & full English breakfast: £69 per double room

Nick’s chosen charity for 2010 is Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice in Selly Oak
The hospice cares for over 1,000 people each year suffering from life-limiting illnesses such as Cancer, Motor Neurone Disease and Multiple Sclerosis and aims to give people the best possible quality of life for whatever time remains to them.
