The welcome
and
business meeting are conducted by the Club president (or vice
president in their absence), they will endeavour to keep this as
short
as possible but it is where important matters regarding the club are
discussed. It is also an opportunity to ask questions of the
club's officers.
After the
business
meeting is concluded the Club president hands control of the meeting
over to the chairman for the evening. The chairman's role is to
introduce the speakers and generally make the meeting run
smoothly. They also lead the 30 second topic session; this is
where each member is asked to speak for 30 seconds on the same topic
(chosen by the chairman). It is merely a warm up exercise and is
aimed at making people feel relaxed about speaking in front of the
club. It is a very good opportunity for new members to get there
first chance to speak.
After the 30 second topic come the formal speeches. Two speakers
have been given an assignment well in advance (normally at least 2
weeks) and have spent time preparing there speeches. Each speech
lasts between six and eight minutes. After the formal speeches
two members give evaluations of the speeches.
